According to World Health Organization, Cardiovascular diseases comprise the top three leading causes of diseases in the Philippines. 17.7 million people die every year from cardiovascular events, that’s 31% of all global deaths. Out of cardiovascular diseases, 53% of deaths are due to coronary heart disease and 17% are due to stroke, all consequences of clogged arteries.
Our body is composed of around 5.6 liters of blood containing nutrients and oxygen that needs to be distributed via over 90,000 miles of pipes called blood vessels which then nourish the cells. The blood circulates throughout the body three times per minute. Clogged arteries cause a decreased supply of blood that may lead to the stoppage of blood flow in an area that may lead to cell death. Blockage of blood supply in the heart is called a heart attack, blockage in the brain is called a stroke.
